These are the stories other people have contacted me with.
Like yourself brought crap wimpey home tooo many problems to bore you with them all but after 21months finally getting all our windows 23 and french doors replaced, garden had no drainage got to be dug up, dpc incorrect, worktop in kitchen got to be replaced...... already had workman in doing more bodging for 80 days.
Major problems in dealing wth drainage from a culverted watercourse means that our houses have flooded eleven times in eight years.
We believe that TW are at fault our roads have not been adaopted because of major surface and foul water drainage problems.
we also bought a wimpy home in kirkcaldy and i have to say we have had nothing but problems from day one , the most recent being no phone lines in the house due to internal wiring fault which took wimpy 2 wks to repair , we are still waiting on kitchen down light repairs reported in july , this however is only the tip of the iceberg with regards to wimpys very poor build standards and non exsistant customer services , i would suggest you do as i have done and stop people as they enter the sales office and warn them ! this seams to work as every time i have done this (making the sales staff aware i am there)there customer services seem to spring into action
We completed our house purchase with Wimpey in November 07 and now October 08 we have only just had our problems nearly rectified. We have had major problems with our water/heating system (scolding when in shower, roasting roasting hot water comin out of the taps, leaking expansion tank hence water pouring through living room ceiling, leaking pipes/2 port valves second time water coming through living room ceiling and hallway stairs. 9 thermostats on hot water cylinder, 4 showers in ensuite, 3 hot water cylinders, 2 expansion tanks.Electrics wired up wrong, bare live wires left in cylinder cupboard( risk of electric shock). Garage door fell off, tarmac drive replaced twice, front door replaced twice, dining room doors and frame taken out and replaced twice. These are just a few of our problems!!!.
I reserved A plot with Taylor Wimpey in Glasgow in June 2007. I concluded missives and were told the property would be ready in December 2007. December came and went and there was not a brick laid.
There was alot of planning issues and we were told in January that there would be a delay and they could not tell us when the house would be ready and that we could renaig from the deal if we wanted. I advised that we would wait but still thought we had the option to pull out if we wanted to.
It is now October 2008 and still to date Building Control has not issued the appropriate warrant. Our house has still not been built 16 months after giving George Wimpey our money.
As we thought that we were still able to pull out we have found a similar house and put a deposit down moving in on February. We instructed our solicitor to advise George Wimpey that we would like to pull out and they have came back and said that this is now not an option.
I am so distraught. I have a 10 year old son who has not has a proper bedroom for 18 months. We have moved twice. It is effecting us all mentally all we want is normality. I have now paid another £500.00 deposit and £450.00 valuation and George Wimpey have said they will not let me get on with my life. The reason we started to look is because we thought we could. My family is suffering I feel as if George Wimpey are dictating my life now.
I bought a George Wimpey (formerly Laing Homes) house in March this year, in Reading Berkshire. I Should have been in before Christmas, but the date kept being moved. Please bear in mind that I sold my house and moved into rented accomodation in November 07 as I thought I would be moving into my own house before Christmas, but because of the constant delays I was homeless by Christmas and had to resort to living on friend's sofas until March. All of my stuff was also in storage for this period costing in excess of £400 per month.
Upon moving in I found the following,
Kitchen incomplete, comprising of the following.
Incorrect doors fitted to 'integrated' fridge/freezer No door on 'integrated' dishwasher Floor not level with bumps and ridges beneath the vinyl covering. It is also now ripped where something hard beneath the flooring has penetrated it Missing handles from several cupboards/draws Cupboard doors/draws not aligned Several room doors did not close/open smoothly Various bits hadn't been painted Hole in patio in back garden Back garden is very boggy Front door covered in some animal hair, but painted over nevertheless in that state Trickle vents missing from patio doors Gap that you can see daylight through in front door Missing drainpipe on garage, causing pooling on patio Drain on driveway blocked with cement causing puddling (risk of flooding) Wrong colour tiles on garage roof (house has red, garage has grey) Tapes blown in master bedroom and ensuite Flys painted into paintwork on all windowsills on 1st floor Toilet flusher in main bathroom sticks and continues to run if not checked Tapes on living room ceiling visible Nails and screws clearly visible in porchway housing (not so on neighbours, so clearly bad workmanship) Toilet cistern in cloakroom not attached to wall properly and it moves whenever you stand up from the toilet basin One of the patio doors did not open Garage electricity supply wired up to next door's house Clothing rail in wardrobe in master bedroom clearly bodged using bits of wood and nails to make it fit Paintwork generally shoddy throughout Letterbox draught excluder broken
I have had them back to sort out some of the more pressing issues and as a 'gesture of goodwill' they agreed to hang an additional two cupboards in my kitchen for me (given to me by previous site manager) at no cost. They hung the cupboards, but when I got home the fixings had gone through the wall to the living room, which they didn't notice and because I trusted them with a key as I was at work, they left my front door open when they left!
I have written to them, including the director of new homes and customer service on numerous occasions and to date the majority of the problems have not been addressed. In fact the director and his subordinates have ignored my communications completely.
Funny thing is, up until recently they had a sign up saying 'George Wimpey' voted 4 out of 5 by their customers, what utter tosh. I would never buy a house from them again and not off of plan either.
Love the site, I am currently on a George Wimpey Development which i moved into 3years ago, and there have been lots of problem and lots of things not finished yet. George Wimpey have now pulled off site saying they have no money to finish the development. Do you have any advice on how to move forward and get the development finished. I am living in a building site and my stage was due for completion 3years ago, still waiting.
We moved in three years ago and have had alot of problems with our boiler and central heating system.
Ourselves and 6 other neighbours have had simular problems and it it has cost some of us alot of money to have the problems sorted out.
Our boiler is currently not working and we are facing a Christmas without heating, relying on electric fires that are costing a small fortune to run while we try to find out what our rights are and if we can get compensation from George Wimpey.
Wimpey House I bought (second owner) had the central heating boiler encased in a cupboard. When I tried to get it serviced the engineer was unable to access the cupboard and I had to pay him for a wasted appointment. It took about 3 weeks to get Wimpey to get back to me. Eventually it was sorted in my case but I expect all the other houses on the development will have a similar experience.
Now in January 2009, there is a second major sewerage blockage on the main sewer. Wimpey have not had the development adopted after 5 years so Anglian Water wont do the work as it is registered as private land - approximately 500 houses!!!!
I moved into the Kingsway development in Shaw Heath, Stockport in April 2006 and the development that I moved into has had a catalogue of problems which could have been avoided.
The one's I can list off the top of my head are faulty boilers, one set on fire in a flat across from me! broken guttering, inadequate drainage on the car park. Each neighbour has a list of personal woes regarding their flats. The person in the flat above me had to have a pipe running form the boiler attached properly and apparently it was unsupported over a ridiculously long span. It eventually broke and was subsequently leaking onto the ceiling.
The most insane thing is that the binstores have no lighting ie no windows or electric light so you have to fumble around in the dark especially on winters evenings. The lighting in the hallways is totally inadequate as well and doesn't have sensors to switch on automatically when someone walks in the hallways. When the timer goes you have to fumble about in the dark to find a light switch
I have just suffered a blown window where the double glazing now has condensation. Since my flat is just out of warranty (3 years old) I was told to contact the manufacturer, It seems they are no longer in business so i was told that its tough and George Wimpy wont organise a replacement. A relatively minor problem but none the less typical of their careless attitude
Hi, Wimpey Homes, or Taylor Wimpey have destroyed our lives after buying one of their new houses in Colchester. lies, lies, lies from them, hundreds of defects, total nightmare. The general public must be warned never to deal with this sham builder. From a very upset family, driven out of the house in the end, so much to tell you if you want to hear, and thank you for listing this website
Hello, My partner and I moved in 8 weeks ago in the Surrey area and like you its something we are beginning to regret. We have found 59 snags in total and the list gets added to daily. The builders are getting through it but we are having to call them on a daily basis to chase it up. The level of service is shockingly bad from both the builders and sales team, and it is ashtonishing how incompetent their work is. I am very grateful to you and your site as its nice but sad to know we're not the only ones.
I thought i'd let you know about Park 25 in Redhill, Surrey. To say we're all disgusted by Wimpey would be an understatement. I'll try and keep the main points as brief as possible:
- no customer service. they speak to you as though you're dirt and no-one wants to help
- the build was 7 mths delayed and caused me to lose a lot of cash on my old house
- the work could have been done better by a 5yr old -we've had no heating and hot water on and off for a year with no end in site.
- the surveyor whose coming to do us a report has commented that the build is one of the worse he's seen in his entire career
- peverel om are trying to charge us £1500 per year and are doing nothing - the site is a tip
- im currently sitting here off work sick with no electricity and no water at all. no-one from the sales offices has bothered to call me back
- these are quick points but you have to live here to understand the stress and misery suffered on a dail basis.
Buying from them is the biggest mistake ive ever made
Briefly the house we purchased in Berkshire started off as a Bryant home which was taken over by Taylor Wimpey and then George Wimpey A big development 120 houses- our problem is our local Councilwill not adopt the site because Taylor Wimpey has not completed the grounds, highways drainage and sewers to their satisfaction. The site was completed in 2006 and we are two years on and the site is beginning to look unkempt.
TW do cut the grass, at least they did in 2008.
Well done on the excellent website, I've got the same story with my George Wimpey house in Kelty.
Even the site manager has referred to my property as "Fawlty towers" to others....so that shows the mentality behind the people attempting to pass themselves off as builders. I've had so many GW idiots visiting & trying to rectify problems in the two years since I moved in. Everyone needs to know that these companies are out to rip the customers or "victims" off. I've spent alot of money employing good tradesmen to repair my home because of the comical efforts of GW. Incidentally, I've found NHBC to be as useful as a chocolate fire guard too.
Best regards, yet another unhappy GW customer with a house riddled with faults.
I bought a brand new house from George Wimpey (in Basingstoke)and moved in last February and have had nothing but problems with it. All my neighbours are in the same position and over a year on are still waiting for basic snagging jobs completed. I understand that there will be snags that will occur, however it is the complete lack of customer service that makes buying a property from George Wimpey a complete nightmar .... Stay clear!!
